Hi,

I think the U-boat you saw in the Deutsches Museum was the first German U-boat the SMU 1 commissioned on 14.12.1906. At 238/283 tons & speeds of 10.8/8.7 knots (the first figures are for surface and the second for submerged) 1 bow torpedo tube with three torpedoes 22 crew and a range of just 1500 seemiles it would not have got very far.

Compared to a WW2 type IXC of 1120/1232 tons, speeds of 18.3/7.3 knots, 4 bow & 2 stern tubes with 22 torpedoes, a crew of between 48-56 men and a range of about 13450 miles it was an altogether much more efficient and larger fighting machine.

But, with today's modern submarines and all the technology and creature comforts they have even the WW2 U-boats were primitive by comparision.
