Spot on. No uboat commander faced with the mouth watering prospect of having the great liner (Troopship)at his mercy could have done anything other than send her immediately to the bottom of the Atlantic. As you say chivalry has nothing to do with it, in fact had he failed to attack he would been very likely been executed for dereliction of duty. It's just there was an implication of a chivalrous motive in Joe's post. btw. Good to hear the splendid Werner Lott's name again. He and the crew of U35 are well remembered here in Ireland for their humanity in putting ashore in Dingle Bay the survivors of the Greek ship Diamantis which he had earlier sunk, no doubt about it, along with Hartenstein and others, a true gentleman.
