I believe you are referring to the X-class midget subs the British
used to try and sink the German battleship Tirpitz in the Norwegian fjord.
These little \' X\' craft, each with a crew of 3, were fitted to carry a two ton
charge of high-explorsives (saddle) on each side of the hull. The mission
was to dropped these explorsives on the sea bottom underneath their
moored target. The explorsives were timed to go off at a set time.
Six of them were towed across the Norwegian Sea by a conventional
submarines. Two were lost on passage, another broke down and was
given up. But X-5, 6 and 7 pressed on up to fifty miles of fjord to the
battleship\'s anchorage. X -6, under the command of Lieutenant Donald
Cameron, and X-7, commanded by Lt Godfrey Place and possibly
X-5, commanded by Lt Henry Creer did succeeded in penetrating
the German patrols and the nets defences to place their explorsives
under Tirpitz\'s hull. The explosions did cause heavy damage to the
battleship which keep her out of action in the coming winter.
