The reported observations seem open to a number of explanations other than a submarine. Passively detected prop noise could have come from another surface ship or been echos. Even if the attack was upon a submarine, the submarine may have escaped. The oil could have originated from other sources, including hull damage to the ship dropping the depth charges, an already sunken wreck, or bilge pumping or other routine losses from coastal shipping. =AL=</HTML>
