USS Juneau

<HTML>Steve,
The case of the Juneau is unique and highly controversial to this day. The Juneau was part of a force of U.S. ships hobbling back from the first night of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. The force included three cruisers, USS Helena, USS San Francisco, and USS Juneau, and a pair of destroyers. San Francisco and Juneau were both heavily damaged; Helena was, at that part of the campaign, decidedly a strategic asset of the first rank. A Japanese submarine torpedoed the Juneau, which exploded and sank almost immediately. The senior officer, the captain of the Helena, decided that 1) there weren\'t likely to be amany survivors from the Juneau (he was wrong, but it is difficult to second guess him) and 2) that he couldn\'t risk his ship to rescue any possible survivors, the San Francisco was such a mess that it couldn\'t help anybody, and 3) the destroyers were needed to screen the cruisers and drive the known sub down.
The Helena radioed a nearby B-17 but the message didn\'t reach the appropriate officers on Noumea in a timely manner, so eventually only 10 survivers were rescued after eight days in the water.
The captain of the Helena was relieved when he got to port by Admiral Halsey. After the war, Halsey admitted he probably made the wrong decision.
Best wishes,
Michael Lowrey</HTML>
