You are right about jokes in France between 1940/1944 about "porte-épées"...
In fact, this kind of daggers, together with their protection devices, were called by naughty french patriots " pompes à vélo", for they were rather similar in shape with bicycle pumps...The main joke, but quite dangerous, was to remove such trophies from drunk petty officers in buses or underground metro.
