Actually the German tanker NORDMARK was disguised as the American PRAIRIE when located on 14.4.1941 by the seaplane from HMS ALCANTARA in the South Atlantic. At the time she was approaching a rendezvous point with the four Italian submarines which had escaped from Massawa. Only later was it realised that the PRAIRIE did not exist but by this time NORDMARK had vanished. The German tanker later sighted one of the Italian submarines and used visual signals to change the rendezvous.
