I was browsing through this forum whilst searching for information on my great uncle who was lost off the US coast having been torpedoed by U-587.

I believe that the mariners' first enemy is the sea and there are very few mariners who would not help fellow mariners in peace time and in war.
Most of my family on my mother's side were associated with the sea, going back several generations. I don't recall my grandfather(armed drifters WW1) nor an uncle (Royal Navy WW2) ever making nasty comments about German mariners.

In the early 80's I was involved in a number of business trips with an ex U-boat skipper who was reputed to have been the youngest U-boat skipper in WW2 (he was 21 years old when he took command), we became good friends. I don't think I need add any more comments.
