There is only one recorded incident of a submerged submarine sinking a submerged U-boat. In all other cases, including unsucessful attacks, at least one of the vessels was surfaced - usually the attacked and not the attacker.

The first known case of a submmersible vessel sinking another was on 21.01.1915 when SMU 22, Kptlt. Bruno Hoppe torpedoed and sank SMU 7, Kptlt. George König. Both vessels were surfaced at the time and it was a case of mistaken identity. Kptlt. Hoppe thought the other vessel was a British submarine and only discovered it was another U-boat when one survivor was picked up from the water.
Both vessels were German U-boats and very sadly the two commanders were the best of friends.

Hope you enjoyed Geoff Jones book - I knew him well.
