German Radar

<HTML>\">One year before WWII had started, a German expert group for the Radar (called Funkmess in German) came to the conclusion that Radar in 1cm range is impossible to develope.<\" These experts were a bunch of engineers who applied contemporary electromagnetic theory and came to the correct conclusion, microwave radar was not possible with known components. The British who invented the cavity magnetron got there by turning cyclotron theory upside down, however, there were very few physicists in Germany at the time who knew how a cyclotron worked, but they were not consulted and/or they were anti-Nazi.

Lack of scientific and technical coordination was a major failing of the 3rd Reich. There were 5 companies working on Radar, but they did not talk to each other and neither did the military services. While the Luftwaffe had the most advanced ground Radar in the world in 1940, the Kriegsmarine more or less ignored the technology and as a result lost the naval war.

\">The German technicans had developed it [Düppel] early, but they have not used it, because they thought that the British could use the same system against the Freya.<\" I have heard a different version of this story. It was Goering who ordered all work on Düppel stopped and no mention of it to be made when he was told about it. Instead of starting a crash program on how to use and defend against Düppel, he buried the knowledge. The Luftwaffe did not use it until after the Hamburg raid of 1943 in which the RAF/USAAF used it on a befuddled Luftwaffe with great effectiveness.
