U boat attack - my father's legacy

My late father saw active service in WW2 as a navigator in Coastal Command, I always knew he had engaged a sub at some time and after he passed away in 1999 I inherited his log books and turned up the entry below - note entry for Oct 17th.

Note that survivors were spotted going in to the water.
A quick recent Google led me to this site and the following page;

He would never have known that all hands were lost but he must have thought the worst given the location.
