Dear Rainer,

Great for me to read your so valuable input again! Thanks for your great detective work. October 1940 would seem to fit climatewise, given the clothewear worn by the KL and his crew on the conning tower.

Finally, it all comes down to this wide "Black 9" painted on the conning tower. If it does identify U-9, then you migth have ID'ed Joachim Deecke, whose low-res picture can be checked in the commander pages of uboat.net and who does bear a resemblance with the KL so vividly photographed by Jaeger.

On a lighter side, have you noticed how fascinated the bridge watch is by something - or maybe somebody - standing on the right side of the pic?

Thanks again, Rainer, for your time and thoughts. I do hope the ID of this KL can be established beyond doubt in the near future
