Basically this is a history forum and "what if" questions are forbidden. The reason is that the answers are by definition speculation and as everybody has an opinion (informed or not) speculation just leads to arguments.

That said a question like who would take over if the commander was killed isn't the kind of "what if" question that is forbidden as there were navy regulations that specified what was to occur and it actually happened multiple times during the war.

An example of a "what if" question that is forbidden is: "Would Germany have won the war if the Type XXI U-boat was deployed earlier in the war?" Any answer would have to be pure speculation as nobody could know for sure.
