Another incident in which Fischer did himself no favour, when U 109 was returning,across the Bay of Biscay, a lookout [Bootsmann Walter Gross] reported seeing a periscope, Fischer apparently discarded the report having not witnessed it himself, and did not have the posible sighting reported, leaving some crew members ill at ease. U 74 with some Bismarck survivors on board was following, and when a radio signal from her stating she had only just managed to avoid six torpedoes in [BF 5534], when this position was checked, it was almost the same position.
