Friedrich-Georg Herrle whilst in command of U-307 was involved in an incident of this sort which could have resulted in court martial proceedings.
Following his last patrol with U-307 Herrle returned the boat to Narvik in October 1944. The boat was long overdue for overhaul and Herrle took the boat to Trondheim. Whilst there he became involved in a fight with another officer outside the Officer's Mess involving, it seems, their mutual interest in a local girl.
Court martial proceedings were avoided, apparently, and the matter dealt with quietly and internally, in view of Herrle's highly-regarded status and his previous award of the German Cross in Gold, which of course carried great prestige.
As a direct result Herrle was obliged to take U-312 on a 22-day patrol, commencing on 14 December 1944, to the north coast of Scotland and Scapa Flow notwithstanding his own long-overdue rest and recuperation entitlement following his previous extended exploits with U-307 around Svalbard. He returned to Trondheim with U-312 on 4 January 1945.
