Thanks for your reply - you are right, it was a typing mistake and the initials on the lens cap of the binoculars are I.W.O. so this fits exactly with them belonging to the 1. Wachoffizier, OLt.z.S.Rudolf Conrad, and my late grandfather's story that he took them from the second in command of U826.
It appears from the records that Herr Conrad died in 2001 but it would be amazing if any of his surviving relatives could see this post as it would be great to here from someone that knew him......
