They have could have a go at it with the deck gun (which in practice is definitely not as easy as it sounds, though). Alternatively, they might even let the pile of scrap metal float about. It\'s total loss anyway (says the captain after looking at the tanker: \"Dem hat\'s das Rueckgrat gebrochen.\", which somewhat freely translated means: \"That ship\'s back is broken.\").
But of course, without using a torpedo, the bit about first discovering that there still are people on board and then also having to leave them behind to die becomes impossible. And since that\'s a rather important factor in the whole message of the book/film...
PS: You\'re risking some flak for (and some off topic replies by) indiscriminately calling the crew \"the nazis\". </HTML>
