<HTML>Dear Anna
Re the torpedoing of the tanker. The serialisation of the film goes into more detail. Following the Captain\'s decision to abandon the tanker crew to their fate, the officers are sat in the wardoom, none talking, alone with their thoughts.
The Captain breaks the silence by saying \"It had to be\" (meaning the abandonment of the burning men). When questioned by the correspondent, he erupts and spells it out to him. \"There is barely enough room for our own men in here!\" Which of course was perfectly true, as captain of his boat his first responsibility was to his men. However as a seasoned mariner it is apparent that he knows that he violated the unwritten sailors code in abandoning the crew and deeply regrets it. Unfortunately in time of war, people become dehumanised.</HTML>
