<HTML>After watching U-571 yesterday, I think I can see where much of the controversy comes from. There are a lot of people who think it\'s a great film; there are a lot of others who think it stinks. Both probably have a point. If you know absolutely nothing about U-boats, personnel, or history, it probably does seem like a \"really great action-adventure movie.\" It has all the elements, after all. Lots of noise, lots of action, explosions, thoroughly stereotypical characters on both sides, etc.

If you know anything about the subject, of course...

What struck me as ironic was the director talking about how important he thought it was to get all of the technical details of the boat itself completely correct, lest he be inundated with letters about actors pulling the wrong levers, or pushing the wrong buttons. So he builds a meticulously accurate submarine, and then fills it with characters straight out of a 1942 \"why we fight\" type of war movie and carefully recycles every myth and error (on both sides) he can dig up.
