<HTML> hi,
lifeboat is a fine film, one of hitchcocks best! the singe set approach was quite effective. walter slezak does a superior job in his role as the german. being the movie was a wartime production it obviously has anti-german statements but for the most part they are anti-nazi, rightfully so. with deeper reflection it is realized also that they german is also the most resourceful and efficient member in the lifeboat. there are also digs towards american capitalism, racial barriers and the british class system. hitchcock always dishes it out in equal portions!
as for the german being picked up as the lone survivor without escape gear. read up on U-521. Kaleu. klaus bargsten was the sole survivor and he was picked out of the sea by a US subchaser without escape gear. i know a crew member of the subchaser who sunk U-521 and he had met bargsten on that day as well as after the war. a big difference was that the U-521 was semi-surfaced and the one in lifeboat was presumeably submerged. in any event lifeboat is a must see for anyone who enjoys hitchcock, suspense or just a good black and white film!
thanks,
