The 12 SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend" at the time of the Normandy invasion were kitted out in black leather U boat overalls, which apparently prevented serious burns in the event of the tank catching fire. Worn over their uniforms, they muat have sweated like buckets!

According to various sources, these were seized from Italian harbour stocks after Italy's capitulation. They apparently came from Germany originally, intended to equip Italian submariners.

The thing is, the young tankers are pictured as wearing black leathers, (predating the 1950s biker gangs by coincidence) and I thought that U boat leathers were grey.

Any ideas?</HTML>
