<HTML>Well, the German Navy, whether Reichs- or Kriegsmarine aped the British one so much and so well that they might have picked up expressions of english origin even in the 1930s and 40s. Anyway, the expression is in the novel as well as in the film and the series. And very well-known commanders, such as K.-F. Merten, whose very fair and objectively presented memoirs have, unfortunately, never been translated into english, used the "Toern" term in their writings as well. The German Navy was, is and probably will be a select club whose members do their best to equal and, if possible, overtake their british counterparts in eveything, so why not language?
