<HTML>Jack:
Scramming a reactor doesn't necessarilly mean there has been a steam leak or
rupture in the primary coolant loop. There are numerous reasons for a "scram" and sometimes the CO, for training purposes, will order a "scram" to observe the reactions of the reactor operators that are on watch. That's another reason for
the diving officer to keep a near-perfect trim at all times, and be ready for surfacing
the boat.
Granted, the main coolant loop is under high pressure, and steam would have caused intense condensation in the RC, but then we movie buffs wouldn't be able to see anyone or anything in the RC. This was not a rupture in a pipe, it was a leak.
There is a difference. If there had been a rupture, the reactor compartment access
door could not be opened, 'cause it seats with reactor compartment pressure, and that pressure would be excessive.
