<HTML>That DE was doomed anyway. His skipper bet his opponent would act like an "old guard" gentleman (as he did) and won the day.
Most likely after that duel he would get the command of a DD. The US Navy could afford the luxury to swap one DE for an U-boat.
We often have discussed this movie, have a look on previous comments.
