<HTML>Yes I see your point with Robert Mitchum, he took it too personal was way too relentless and he went overboard (no pond intended). Yes that would be highly unlikely for a U.S. Destroyer Captain to pull a stunt like that. But then again it wouldn't be Hollywood otherwise.

But as to the U-Boat Captain, that was not a uncommon practice at all. Infact BdU encouraged the Captains to surface on a wonded ship at their discretion and use the Deck Gun to finnish her off to save on Torpedoes. Among those who had this MO where Viktor Shutze, Otto Kretshmer, Peter-Erich "Ali" Cremer, Wolfgang Luth, and Ernst Bauer, just to name a few. Again it was at their discretion especially with a Distroyer. But Otto Kretschmer was especially Fanatical in this tactic.
