Yes...most of the time, as stated somewhere in Adm K.Dönitz 's book
called Memoirs. He himself try to be at every u-boat that leaves or arrives from a war patrol. The Germans had a big pride for their U-boat officers & men as they played military band music on a U-boat's career. This was most common during the early part of the U-boat campaign of WWII..
