<HTML>Lothat-Günther Buchheim took quite a few pictures of departing and returning U-Boot crews, as part of the customary ceremonies. One that to me is full of irony on several levels shows a boat running in on Christmas Day; the bearded young officers in the tower are holding up a "Neptune's trident" they'd put together themselves, and hanging from it is an Advent wreath. These were standard issue, as were collapsible Christmas trees (there's one that comes aboard during the film Das Boot) but the inspired looniness of hanging the wreath from a trident--and the grins on their young faces--help to drive home the hopeless stupidity of war.
