You're so right! There's a particularly telling photo of the chief of the 11th Flotilla, standing alone amid a lot of wrecked cases to bid farewell to a lone u-boat in spring 1945, no more flowers or nurses, or bands, just the bare honours extended by a higher-ranking officer to the 'morituri', more or less. It's to be found in "Der U-Boot-Krieg".
