This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>All of the following is mere conjecture based on not-very-precise interpretations of the lines (I've got the "Fernseh" version in German.) First, Werner says "They call it 'Sprengwagen,' " which I think translates as "firetruck" or something similar. The phrase "They call it . . ." suggests that this is something the younger men inflict on their betters whenever they a) are drunk enough and b) have the opportunity, e.g. this isn't a one-time exercise in synchronized precision urination. Der Alte switches on his windshield wipers with an air of resignation that implies he's been through this before; also, in response to the IWO's horrified embarrassment when he stumblingly tries to report what happened to him on the way over to the bar, der Alte appears unshocked and indeed amused. (Well, given what an ass our IWO is , who wouldn't be?)
Later, after Dufte mistakenly reports an airplane overhead--which apparently was just a seagull--der Alte asks him quietly if he was part of the "Sprengwagen" the night before. Dufte replies, in a breathless, scared voice, "Javoll, Herr Kaleun." Der Alte then says something to him which I can't quite get, my German being imperfect, to put it mildly, but it's said in an almost conspiratorial tone which indicates that it COULD be along the lines of "Hey, I've done that myself."
Just guessing.
