<HTML>Hi Robert, hi Meg,
I think I can explain how that oily rag cam into the bow room: Johann, known in the whole Kriegsmarine as an expert on long distance throws of oily rags, threw that thing. It went just thru the closed door, passed the Zentrale, where Kriechbaum, working on his last courses, didn't see it coming, it passed the "Alte", sleeping in his room, and went right thru the officers room, where the LI and the II WO, discussing Hitlers latest strategy on uboat-war-fare, while the I WO was on the conning tower, didn't remark it either. And so it took it's way thru the bow-room hiting Buchheim right into his face. Splash! I think that sound rather realistic, doesn't it?!? ;-)))
Btw, realistic, did you ever count the bombs being thrown by the two single-motored planes on the boat at the end of the movies? I can hard believe that a squad of B 17 will be able to carry such a number! Or, did you ever see one single bomb hanging under the planes when they began their attac?
And did you see the uniforms of the "Sanitäter" taking care of the wounded NCO Kriechbaum? I've never seen or even heard of such uniforms in the intire german military history! Really funny!
O.k. so far Petersens tribute to Holywood, but also Buchheim makes a mistake in his roman, when he writes at the very end that on of the bombs penetrated the u-boat-bunker hiting the boat. In 1941 the alliies did not have such bombs.
