<HTML>I have to take issue with you on this one. In Robert Stern's "Battle Beneath The Waves" several u-boat veterans cast doubt on the Phantom cracking up, forcing the Old Man to fetch his sidearm. The veterans state that while a man could crack up under depth charge bombardment it would be dealt with long before it reached the commander's notice, so there must be some way of keeping these things from the hierarchy.
I also would believe that the journalist would be sensible and not report the incident - in a cramped space like a u-boat he would know how unpopular it would make him.
It would also be a different matter if, as you say, "what would happend next time, when an ordinary seaman slaps a mate?". The point is that he isn't a mate - he is a stranger, using up valuable space and air for no great return.
And let's face it, he was asking for it!</HTML>
