<HTML>well, budgets, deadlines, availability, need to create tension and artistic impact.....I don't think historic accuracy was top of the list in this instance :-)

I no nothing about aircraft, but asked my son who thinks the planes in the Gibraltar attack and final raid might be Thunderbolts, because of the shape of the air-intake behind the prop, and arrangement of guns linked to fire in sequence. The Klug article 'Filming Das Boot' says they were American trainers found at a French aero club and flown by two french pilots, with RAF roundels painted on for the film.The formation shot (which is a stock shot, not filmed by Petersen) he thinks may be B-25's.

I suspect a Swordfish, worthy aircraft though it was, as a bi-plane would not have matched these more streamlined aircraft (whatever they are) for aesthetic effect and excitement as they swoop in guns ablaze, even if one had been available.
