<HTML>Hello Dave,

Nice to hear from you! I do have U-Boot Krieg and think it's quite a wonderful collection. The faces are especially compelling--makes you realize how good the casting of the movie was! Die U-Boot Fahrer and ZurTode Gesiegt are very powerful too.

The rescue of men from the mined boat, which sneaked over into Das Boot, isn't part of the story in Die Festung, even though that's where it "belongs" if one is to stick with absolute fact--and of course, one needn't in a novel. Maybe he wanted the bombing raid at the end of Das Boot to be especially tragic, so he doubled the number of men killed or wounded.

As far as I know, Buchheim did NOT go out on U-96 until October 1941, so the pictures from that patrol were probably taken by the LI, Fritz Grade (for whom actor Klaus Wennemann, may he rest in peace, was an amazing look-alike.) He served with Lehmann-Willenbrock on twelve patrols, just as in the movie, but with a much happier ending, of course.

In the front of all the books, Buchheim mentions that some of the photographs were taken by Fritz Grade. Naturally, these include all the ones in which he himself appears!

If anyone knows otherwise about the photos from the February 1941 patrol, they will undoubtedly speak up. I bet it was Grade, though.

Best regards,
Meg</HTML>
