<HTML>And while we're on the subject, the American translation (Denver and Helen Lindley), while generally considered to be the best, is also somewhat abridged, although most of the cuts consist of well-nigh-untranslatable colloquial dialogue, impromptu verses (which I discovered with glee upon my first read-through in German) and a few over-the-top (for Puritanical sensibilities)sexual fantasies. I haven't read any other translations, but I think the American one is pretty good.
