Some well-known writer--I think it may have been C. S. Lewis--described his wartime experience as alternating between excruciating boredom and absolute terror. Along with many other things, the DVD of Das Boot really captures these two emotions!
I've seen the movie countless times, but now I tend to "fast forward" past the scene with the burning tanker; it's unbearable.
