michel:

First of all, that URL you posted is a bummer:

[groups.msn.com]

In the second paragraph, you wrote: ''........new torpedoes and
ammunition......."

Do you actually believe that U.S. Navy's 553mm torpedoes would
fit in the SURCOUF'S 550mm torpedo tubes? And, that her 8" main battery ammo would be the same as the U.S. Navy's ammo?
Or, that the U.S. Navy's 37mm ammo would work in the SURCOUF'S two AA guns? Let's be realistic!

You wrote: "Another friend ffrom Mason's Island also wrote of this saying "The submarine visited the sub base in Groton and was restocked with victuals, other supplies and even two torpedoes." There you go again with those torpedoes........ Even the British
torpedoes wouldn't work in SURCOUF'S 550mm torpedo tubes.

You wrote: 'There are rumors that Surcouf had a great deal of gold
from the French Treasury in her large compartment." Just rumors,
just rumors.......

You wrote: "It is also alleged that Surcouf was found and boarded in Long Island Sound in the sixties by Jacqes Cousteau
and hushed up." More "merde de taureau."

You should contact CAPTAIN Julius Grigore, USN (Ret) at:

scadta@comcast.net and ask him where the SURCOUF lies. He
has made a wager of $100,000 to anyone who can prove that the
SURCOUF in anywhere but near Colon, Panama. He is also the
gentleman who recognized that there were only 129 names engraved on the SURCOUF War Memorial at Cherbourg. He compared the patrol reports with the list of names on the memorial
and found a missing name, the 130th man. It was that of a French-man, Ellectrician's Mate Paul Razo, formerly of the Royal Navy,
who was officially transferred to SURCOUF, from the Royal Navy on 1/10/42, in Halifax, so he could be with his Free French cousin.
His findings, which were made in 1976, were accepted by the British and French Admiralties and then by the Guiness Book of
Records in 1978. Razo's name was finally placed on the
Cherbourg monument in June 1980. The submarine previously holding that unenviable record was USS THRESHER (SSN-589), which was lost with129 aboard her on 4/10/63.

You should take up my suggestion about obtaining a copy of:
"Submarine Warfare: Monsters & Midgets" by Richard Compton-Hall, and read pages 50 to 57.

There's more information available on eBay, in the form of a mono-
graph titled: "Debunking Foul Rumors About the Free French
Submarine SURCOUF"

Another publication titled: "Who Killed SURCOUF" by George Young is available from:

Schooner Books, Ltd
5378 Inglis Street
Halifax, Nova Scotia
B3H 1J5 Canada

And, "SUBMARINE JOURNAL: French Sub SURCOUF Under a
Microscope" by Edwin Keifer of:

Keifer Publications
600 West Point Drive
Faairlawn, OH - 44333-2654
Tel. 216-666-6434

And have a great day,

ROBERT M.
