I had another look and thanks to to VEK's translation of the actual dialogue (my own "Urlaub Deautsch" is not up to the task) the fault is clearly with whoever put together the subtitles. They at no time clarify that Kretschmer was still alive and as regards Endrass, the clear implication is that he was finished, a broken man.

This is just a bit of fun and as we all know Das Boot is the greatest war film ever made.
