Hi All, Actually this is somewhat of a valid question. Admiral Raeder was a stickler as to what he considered proper conduct of his officers, especially in public and stuck his nose into marriages and other relationships between them and their women. He dismissed Reinhard Heydrich from the navy for something he considered an indiscretion (I think it was just breaking an engagement, but per

Hi PF, Hitler did encourage the Japanese to kill survivors in the water but when he ordered Dönitz to do it Dönitz refused. See the article at: entitled “Treatment of Merchant Ship Survivors by U-boat Crews 1939 - 1945”. I also replied the same to the post on ubootwaffe.net.

Hi Spindlegger, See: . It mentions both diesels being disabled by heavy weather. There were no survivors.

Hi Spindlegger, This question comes up from time to time so I will go into it in a little detail. First, there are two basic types of crews. The one we generally think of first is the crew of a specific vessel at a specific point in time. For example the crew of U-126. These crews include all of the men serving on the vessel together, officers and enlisted men alike. The other type of

Hi All, We went through something like this years ago and it still comes up today from time to time. The wreck in question is located off Jeremie Haiti and was supposed to be a U-boat & some of the locals in the area even confirmed it. It was discussed over & over again here on the forum until it was finally determined to be an extensively surveyed wreck of a Spanish-American War era

Hi John, No idea. As I pointed out in my post, Showell didn't list any of the boats involved. He also claimed 25 U-boats sunk by Allied submarines but only 22 are listed here on uboat.net. He may have been using the records at the U-boot Archiv but he doesn't list his source either.

Hi Bill, lists 22 U-boats that were sunk by Allied submarines. This list does not include the 12 Japanese submarines sunk by American submarines listed by Robert. Of the German U-boats sunk by Allied submarines, 14 were sunk by British submarines (one of these, U-63, was sunk by a British submarine in conjunction with other British warships), 3 were sunk by Russian submarines, 2 by Dutch

Hi Spindlegger, The U-boot Archiv is run by its founder Horst Bredow, a former U-boat officer. It is not open year round and when it is open, Horst has to depend on unpaid volunteers to help with inquiries. The archive gets no government support and depends on donations to pay the bills so there are no paid employees. Jak Showell (well-known Brit U-boat historian and author) generally spend

Hi Richard, First, I am not a gunner’s mate. That said, the real answer to your question is that they didn’t keep them from rusting up. However different guns had different problems. The deck guns The 88mm and 105mm deck guns were actually very reliable. I have never heard of one of them failing to fire for any reason other than bad ammo (however that isn’t to say it never happened

Hi Marc, There is no U-boat off Haiti. Please read the other posts on the thread and you will see the wreck in question is not a U-boat. This topic has been discussed for years here. Do a forum search for Haiti to see some of the discussions and the result. Do the search for “all dates” not just 30 days which is the default. The video you point to is the type of thing that causes rumors

Hi Barbro, Note that the Kongshaug was torpedoed by an E-boat, not a U-boat. If you are certain the ship he was on was Norwegian and that it was sunk by a U-boat you can go to the “Ships hit by U-boats” section of the site (http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/), select “Norwegian” as the country and click “Search”. You will get a list of all Norwegian ships hit by U-boats. The list contains

Hi edustop, Completely false! The following from the article you point to should have been a clue: "Carlos Perciavalle continues to talk about. On this occasion, the comedian who after suffering a car accident claimed he was healed by extraterrestrials, confesses that in the seventies met Adolf Hitler in Bariloche."

Hi Darter1, The magnetic detonator Germany had at the start of the war was flawed and its use was stopped for a time but it was replaced by better magnetic detonators (Pi 2 and Pi 3) and they were used successfully throughout the rest of the war.

Hi slanw, The type of charge you are describing is designed to burn a relatively small hole through heavy armor and that is just fine for use on a tank but a very large hole is desirable for sinking a ship. A small hole in a ship is easily plugged and bilge pumps can also handle a lot of water. It was even more effective to detonate the warhead just under the ship and break its back. Ship

Hi Buche, You have an F5S Aircraft Torpedo Pistol. It is an impact only pistol and was only used on torpedoes dropped from airplanes. It wasn't used on the torpedoes fired from a U-boat. You have a PM with more information.

Hi Dan, Any watch with a U-boat number on it is almost certainly a fake - at least not an "issue" watch. Watches were not issued to the boats so there was no reason to mark one with a U-boat number. It is highly unlikely that a crewmember would have marked his watch with his U-boat number for security reasons and he knew he might be transferred to another U-boat the next day anyway

Hi bjk38, This doesn’t answer your question but it does address the escape from a sub issue. The basic U-boat crew training included a course on escaping from a sunken U-boat. The training was conducted is a special pool. The escape procedure didn’t actually require swimming. They were issued escape gear called a Dräger rebreather that was a vest that contained an air supply and doubled

Hi Johann, If you can't find out the correct number and the tanks were only deck cargo and not also carried in the holds you can probably assume 52 is closest to the correct number as that is about all the room there was for that type of deck cargo on a C2 and even 52 seems high to me.

Hi Guys, The .303 was generally only dangerous to the U-boat crew. Also note that a .50 cal or even a .20mm hole in the pressure hull would not necessarily stop a U-boat from diving as small holes could be plugged at least temporarily. Additionally U-boats had bilge pumps that could handle some leaks if the boat wasn't too deep. However they might well stop the U-boat from diving dee

Hi Guys, The confusion about the Type II reloads has been discussed on the forums here at uboat.net before. See the thread at: . It was intended to carry 3 reloads in the Type IIs but this proved impractical and only 2 were ever carried. Also only the G7a was carried in the external containers. They did however have their warheads but not their pistols. I examined one of the conta

Hi Bill, Try using your search skills to search this forum for Trident. Be sure to select “All Dates” as the discussion goes back 10 years. They never produced anything but a blurry sidescan image and a whole lot of speculation in all these years. Additionally nobody has ever come forward with any proof that the Type XIB program wasn’t scrapped before one was completed. No former U-boat
