Hi there Terry, Contact at last after many determined attempts! I gave up after receiving a very frosty reception from the pompous buffoon at Military Press, who indicated that customers were a nuisance and sales enquiries were not welcome. The Telegraph piece was typical British sensationalist journalism. They even managed to source their own image of U-532 in Liverpool, which they

Thanks for yours Vidar, Strange that after captivity in Norway and Germany he chose to travel to England. 'Bad Schwartau' sounds very Germanic. I am certain that there is no estate of that name in UK. And another issue arises. How was it that he was apparently released within a year, when many of his comrades were still in PoW camps in UK in 1948? He was a veritable U-boa

Thank you Fernando and Vidar for your responses. I have the circumstances of Suhren's delivery of the fifteen U-boats on passage from Vestfjord to Trondheim to the Canadian 9th Escort Group. What I was hoping to confirm was Suhren's transfer to captivity in England after he reported to Trondheim with the five surface ships. The inference is, per Fernando's response, that Te

Today's British Daily Telegraph prints an interesting illustrated article on the surrender of the remnant U-boat fleet to Loch Eriboll, Sutherland, Scotland in May 1945. U-1231 and U-532 are pictured together with Otto-Heinrich Junker on the bridge of U-532 after arrest. Go to www.telegraph.co.uk and search 'Eriboll'. The article also refers to a forthcoming book on

Slightly off-topic perhaps, but on 30 September 1943 a general order was issued that virtually cancelled all construction work on ordered Type VIIC boats, in favour of the new Elektro boats. Boat numbers were allocated on placement of the order; a subsequently cancelled order would leave a gap in the sequential numbering of completed boats. Appendix 6 of Peter Sharpe's book "U-BOAT FA

Hi all, Can any member quote a specific archive document that confirms where the strategic cargo of this boat was off-loaded? Was it at Liverpool? Or elsewhere? Thanks in advance. ******************

I am not sure that U-532 surrendered at Liverpool. The boat surfaced and surrendered in accordance with the broadcast capitulation orders on 10th May 1945 when in the Atlantic approaches and was ordered to proceed surfaced to loch Eriboll. She was returning from a voyage to the far east to collect essential war supplies. She arrived in Loch Eriboll on 13th May. She was escorted that day

Hi David, Many thanks for that. I agree. 30EG was involved in the escort of surrendered U-boats from Norway to UK during late May/early June 1945. 9EG was so involved between 16th and 21st May, and that is where the confusion has arisen. Thanks again. *****************************

72. K.690
Hi All, Was HMS (OR HMCS) CAISTOR CASTLE (or CAISTER CASTLE) K.690 ever a part of the 9th (Canadian) Escort Group, especially in the latter years of WWII? I have HMCS LOCH ALVIE (K.428), HMCS MATANE (K.444), HMCS NENE (K.270), HMCS MONNOW (K.441) and HMCS St. PIERRE (K.680) as constituting 9EG. Occasionally there are unexplained references to CAISTOR CASTLE. Anyone have the answer?

Hi Rainer, Many thanks for that. It agrees with my data on the number of surface ships arrested by the 9th Escort Group, and identifies each vessel, for which I am very grateful. None of the four 'ordinary' vessels could have had connection with Norway and its Royal family. I think it is safe now to conclude therefore that the vessel identified as the former Norwegian Royal ya

Hi Everyone, When the 9th Escort Group encountered fifteen surrendering U-boats in Norwegian waters in mid-May 1945 the surrendering vessels were accompanied by five surface ships "including the King of Norway's private yacht'. The five surface ships were ordered to return to a Norwegian port and the U-boats were escorted to British waters. I am trying to identify the vesse

Hi there Brian, There could be three candidates for the U-boat sighted and escorted by your late father. Your mention of a "1100 ton German minelaying submarine" rather suggests a Type IXC/41 vessel. U-802 was a Type IXC/41 that surfaced and surrendered on 9th May and was escorted into Loch Eriboll on 11th May 1945. U-1009 was a Type VIIC/41 (smaller, but still capable of car

Evidently the destroyers HMS VENOMOUS and HMS VALOROUS were despatched to Norway on 14th May 1945 to undertake clearance operations prior to the entry of Allied personnel into Kristiansund south as part of the re-occupation of Norway. German officers performed the hand-over ceremony aboard HMS VENOMOUS on 15th May 1945. The frigates HMS LOCH ECK, HMS BAYNTUN, HMS BAHAMAS and HMS PAPUA were

Hi all, Is anyone able to quote details of the British vessels involved in the escort of U-boats surrendered in Norwegian waters back to Scotland at the end of May and early June 1945? I know that HMS LOCH ECK (K.422) escorted U-2529 from Kristiansund to Loch Eriboll on 3rd June 1945. Which other British vessels were involved in a similar duty (from Norway to Scotland) at about the same p

Hi again all, My further researches have succeeded in partially settling the queries I raised in my last posting. Issue No. 10 (Autumn 1994) of the HMS BYRON Newsletter contains a first-hand account of the surrender by members of the crew present in May 1945. The account confirms that U-532 and U-1231 were included in the group that surrendered to Loch Eriboll and the 21st Escort Group.

Hi all, I am still working to identify all of the surrendered vessels that put into Loch Eriboll following the capitulation on 4th May 1945. Most of the research is relatively straightforward, though inevitably one or two anomalies do surface. The Destroyer Escorts website www.desusa includes a piece written in 2004 ("The Forgotten Operation") by Pat Godwin, which gives a compre

Greetings all, I recently came across volume 9, issue 223 of 'The War Illustrated' dated January 4, 1946. Included in the publication is a short piece referring to the sinking of SS CERAMIC in December 1942 en route to South Africa. Much is known and published about this vessel and its demise and much is available though links via this website. The contemporary 1946 piece puts a

Hi Bruce, Many thanks indeed for your response. I will attempt to obtain copies of the files you mention from the PRO. (As an aside, the Eriboll Estate eventually passed to Alan Clark, M.P. - of "Diaries" fame - and features extensively in his published memoirs). Thanks again for everything.

Hi All, I am researching the history of the deep-water Loch Eriboll on Scotland's north coast and its contribution to the British Navy's activities in two world wars. A memorial high on the loch-side commemorates the mighty HMS HOOD, about which much is published and the history of which is known. Also included in the memorial is a similar reference to British submarine H-43, ab
