Very embarrasing... missed the HJELTENAES of Sep 24, and the name change business. The Norwegian'Sea Declaration' had no mention of any other name, or imminent name change. Sorry for this. Jan

Going through the Norwegian publications of 'Sea declarations' after ship losses for WWI, I have come across a U-boat sinking in the Mediterranean in 1916 that is missing (as far as I can see) in the listing on uboat.net. The 'Sea declaration' is a very detailed report of the sinking, and witnesses are very clear on the German nationality of the sub (refering to flag as well

I direct your attention to the paper "Optimizing protocols for high-definition imaging of historic shipwrecks using multibeam echosounder" which is available as a pdf at URL Although a highly technical paper in another field, it contains at the end a stunningly underwater "point cloud" picture of the full hull of the SS Chirripo - mined in the Irish Sea in December 1917 -

Hi Simon. and many thanks for the details on the weather. It is much more than I have gotten from the Swedish historical data. And thanks for checking the KTB. That it not mention details about the fate of the crew was not unusual, I gather. We are on the same page about what presumably happened, but many lifeboats in the North Sea DID survive after sinkings and crews got saved. I think

More than a decade after the last post in this thread this post presumably may be totally obsolete, but nevertheless I have searched the scandinavian published collections of marine inquests regarding toerag's question on the Scandinavian ships on his list. on Borø: At the inquest in Tønsberg, held Dec 18, the Master Lars Endresen gave the location of the sinking as "20' N o

Hello all; My apologies if this is slightly off-topic, but I have been trying to find how merchant ships were assigned to the convoys that started in 1917. As mentioned in another thread, I am researching the loss with all hands of the small Swedish composite steamer HAMMAR II in September '17, by UB 62. She obviously sailed alone, and I am trying to figure out why. She was very sma

Michael, Fantastic, thanks! I mailed and went to bed, but you answered within half an hour. I could not be more impressed! I am contacting the Swedish meteorological institute for weather data for a picture of why the lifeboat(s) did not save the crew, but even if the info will be available it could only provide theories. I presume that the crew were able to board the lifeboats, but that is

Hello all; This is my first post, but I have been lurking for some time, and used the web site for even longer. It is a truly amazing resource! I am researching the loss of the small Swedish composite steamer Hammar II, sunk by UB 62 September 6, '17. The whole crew perished, but the body of the master was discovered on a beach on the island of Tjörn (north of Göteborg/Gothenburg) at t
