Hello Guys, In his book David Hepper, gives a "probably" to the sinking of the RN drifter PROTECT by UC68. Is there any attribution by Spindler or Bendert to the sinking of the PROTECT?????? Respectfully, Joe

"At 1:20 PM when in position 40.42N;25.56E, a mine was seen floating on the surface on the starboard bow. The trawler closed slowly, intending to dispose of it by gunfire when they struck a submerged mine they had not seen." Hi Michael, "To judge from details provided by Laurens in his Histoire de la Guerre Sousmarine Allemande, it fell into French hands at the end of the war." Quote from U-boat Intelligence, Robert M. Grant, page 159. We can only hope that the "it", the KTB turns up eventually. Thanks and God bless, Joe

Hi Oliver, If Lord Salisbury didn't sink on a submarine laid mine then what was the cause of its demise??? How did Hepper determine that Lord Salisbury was sunk off Samothraki and not Eros??? The is quite a distance between the two. Respectfully, Joe

Hi Simon, First, let me thank you for providing the position of the sinking. My source does not give the date that U117 laid the mines off Barnnegat Shoals. He states only that the mines were laid after sinking the Somerstab and before sinking the Frederick R. Kellogg. I'm guessing that would make it 12-13 August?? Almost TWO months later the San Saba became the first victim on 4 O

On 13 August 1918, U117 with Kpt/Lt Droscher torpedoed the American tanker Frederick R. Kellogg loaded with 7500 barrels of crude oil. She sank in 4 minutes and settled in 30 meters of water. Seven men lost their lives. She was later raised and sailed for many years. How should this event be classified? SUNK? DAMAGED? SUNK-REFLOATED? Other? Respectfully Joe R

The Chappara Should be listed under U117 and NOT U155. U155 laid mines off the Canadian coast, Betty Island near St. Johns near Halifax, Between Sambro LV and Sambro Ledge. a total of 18 mines. U155 did NOT lay mines any where near Burnagat. A person can go blind trying to read Studt's handwriting or so I'm told. Respectfully, Joe

Michael, Poor choice of words on my part. Should have wrote disabled steering gear, threw sails overboard, used explosives on masts, just to name a few. But, considering the other source, and the KTB, I'll concede your point. God bless, Joe

Hi Michael, Perhaps Saalwachter only disabled the machinery? Can't image Lloyds listing Ladas as damaged unless an insurance claim was filed. U57 with von Georg disabled a trawler that way, having sunk 19 trawlers and putting their crews on the disabled one. But, what the hell do I know. Anyway, thanks for the update. God bless Joe
