Michael, Thank-you for confirming what I only suspected. Perhaps the seventeen vessels should be added to the successes of UC37? Thanks again, Joe

Hello Good and welcome to both forums, "The UBboat departed Varna on 27 September 1916 for operations off Sevasopol and was never heard from again." Verschollen, Messimer page 131. The commander was Oberleutnant zur See Lutjohann. On the biographical page for Lutjohann, it does have two different dates for his death. August 31, 1916 is definately incorrect and no one knows

Hi Debbie and welcome to the forum, We have two facts concerning the disappearance of the Queenborough. She sailed on or about 21 March '17. U86 sank a British trawler on 23 March 1917. KptLt Crusemann saw the port number of the trawlers he sank. When recalling the incident in his kriegstagebuch (war diary), he wrote or typed GY568. GY568 is the Valentia which was NOT sunk and s

Hello Everybody, Ernst Hashagen in his book "U-Boote Westwarts" lists his successes while in command of UB21. He also lists the ships he stopped for inspection of contraband and then released. He must have had access to the KTB of UB21. Here is the dilemma. There is no mention of the Swedish HARALD or the Norge PLUTO which was taken as a prize. Perhaps some esteemed member

Hello Jan-Olof!!! I don't know how to thank-you, but I'll try. THANKS A MILLION TIMES!!! This article is much easier to read than the other one and much more detailed. I also believe you answered Michael Lowrey's question about the Belgian L'Avenir and Pays Bas. Welcome back to the forum. Your expertise is much appreciated. Best Regards, Joe R

279. Re: UB6
Mike, Why would a commander of a uboat pass on sinking two Dutch tugs that were on a voyage from Maassluiss TO London and sink the lighters? The Dutch account I believe is misdated. It should be dated 24 Sept, unless they don't know the difference between a torpedo boat and a uboat. The words "springlading tot zinken" is disturbing to me. At any rate, I will let it g

This might help if someone can translate from Dutch.

Hello Everyone, On 23 Sept '16 the Dutch tugboats Gouwzee (172/06) and Lauwerszee(???/??) were towing four Belgian lighters, two apiece, when intercepted by UB6. The lighters were sunk. What became of the Dutch tugboats? Sunk? Sunk and refloated? Taken as prizes? Left in sinking condition? Released? Respectfully, Joe

Hi Again Guys, Koningen Wilhelmina 1943/95 struck a mine on 31 July '16 two miles from the North Hinder LV. She took 40 minutes to sink and sank at 52'04 North 02'40 East. Three stokers were killed. Many secondary sources attribute the mine to UC1. Can anyone confirm?? Respectfully, Joe

Hi Michael, Simon, Yves My secondary source confirms that the torpedo was fired from a distance of 2000 meters. At that range the commander could not see that it was a Dutch ship and a neutral. The German government expressed its regrets and paid restitution. Thank-you to each one of you, Joe

Hi Guys, From the allied side: On 29 Dec 1916 the Totnes a purpose built paddle mine- sweeper 810/16, while steaming (or is it paddling) to assist the HMS Ludlow which had struck a mine, hit a mine herself. The mine field was laid by UC6. Totnes should be added to the successes of UC6 as DAMAGED. Respectfully, Joe

Hello Michael, "On 6 October U106 reported that it was off St. Abbs Head and expected to arrive off Terschelling on the morning of 7 October." Quote from VERSCHOLLEN. There was more communication the next day. There is no mention off sinking or damaging any ships, which would be standard operating procedure if Kpt/Lt Hufnagle had in fact sunk any ships. Hi again guys, Any attribution by Spindler or Bendert for the sinking of HMS Contest and torpedo damage on the City of Lincoln??? David Hepper credits "almost certainly" UB32. This site credits U106. Yves's site credits City of Lincoln to UB32 and gives no attribution for HMS Contest. Any one have some hard evidence??? Respectfully, Joe
