No but as far as British coastal waters are concerned, you could look at Silent Warriors by R Young and P Armstrong, History Press. Its a work of impressive research with input from Dr A Niestle.

Guess your right Rob Hoole. I did not really look at it like that. Still its better than Leith Lockhart (or is it Lockhart Leith ?) from the First World War.

Admiralty suspected in the 1950s that the CH series had borne fruit. Bob Coppock of the Naval Historical Branch was certainly aware of at least one mined Type VIIc off Padstow in 1989. These individual wrecks may have been identified by Dr Niestle but despite the portrayals of documentaries, their presence has been known for some time.

In fact the RN kept a very detailed record of mining ops. Try Staff History Mining Operations 1939-45 BR1736 (56) I use this volume on a regular basis.

I am trying to establish the opposing lines of argument on this debate using primary sources. I know where to find the log of HMS Norfolk but where can I find Adi Schnee's account ? I do not think there is a surviving KTB from this patrol. Anybody out there able to help or point me in the right direction ?

Post war research indicated that the projected track of the U-boat would have to be barraged by depth-charges to even stand a chance of sinking it. Until late 1917 the standard of Admiralty depth charges carried by the Auxiliary patrol, was unreliable (and weak) to put it mildly. The chances of a successful sinking in this encounter would have been negligible in my estimation

Payment of the bounty based upon an assessment of the numbers of U-boat men killed, was a standard, if unsavoury British practice. Financial inducements were designed to persuade British and allied merchants (and auxiliary patrol) to take the initiative at a time when the U-bootfahrer were in the ascendant. When it comes to H5, this particular morale-boosting effort cost the lives of a fine c
