Hi David Like an old U-boat stuck on the bottom, I have broken surface again! Its nice to see your book is coming out on The U-boats of Loch Eriboll. I have had my head stuck in research for longer than I care to remember, about Operation Deadlight - Bury the Wolves Deep. Publication dates came and went, in the end I decided to "Run Silent & Run deep" until I could get a

From the Times Newspaper today 19/03/08. Valentin U-boat base for sale. Dank and dark, built by slave labourers, the vast concrete complex known as Valentin on the north German coast is not exactly a des res. Germany's notorious submarine factory is, however, up for sale to anyone interested in a building with 7m-thick walls, the largest surviving bunker from the Third Reich. The

The insides of U-534 can now be seen as never before as it awaits transportation to her new home at the Woodside Ferry Terminal. Experts spent two weeks using a diamond wire to dissect the vessel which is more than 250 feet long and weighs over 1,000 tons. On Monday,10 March, the floating crane Mammoth will start the next stage of the operation carrying each section to its new berth at Woodside

Cash boost for U-534 has now attracted £550,000 of European Objective One funding. Neil Scales from Merseytravel who runs the Woodside terminal said: "This is a great boost to an exciting project." The submarine will be split into sections which will allow visitors to see inside it from specially-built viewing platforms. The exhibition in the visitors centre will display some o

Have to agree with your findings Atlantik-Pirat! U-534 is looking a lot better even with that primer undercoat on. As regretful as her cutting has to be money is now being spent on her preservation and the deterioration and rot has been slowed down. Lets hope one day that she will be put back together again. Here is some recent info I have on the new Exhibition Centre. U-534 is being cut

Work began this week on cutting up the German submarine U-534 which will become a major tourist attraction at Woodside Ferry Terminal. Engineers using a special diamond wire cutter will slice the sub into four sections, each of which will be moved by floating crane from its present location at Mortar Mill Quay to Woodside. Each section of the sub, which weigh up to 240 tons, will take a day t

saw this in the "Daily Telegraph" The final resting place of three German U-boats, nicknamed "Hitler's lost fleet", has been found at the bottom of the Black Sea. The submarines had been carried 2,000 miles overland from Germany to attack Russian shipping during the Second World War, but were scuttled as the war neared its end. Now, more than 60 years on, explorers

From The Times September 4, 2007 ‘Unprincipled ruffian’ told MI5 of Nazi plot to get gold to Argentina Michael Evans, Defence Editor. MI5 uncovered a plot by Nazi leaders to smuggle plundered jewellery, gold and other valuables in a submarine to Argentina two years before the end of the Second World War, according to newly released secret files. The details emerged from 30 days of

Hi MPC I agree with your sentiments entirely. The whole saga of U-534 is very sad indeed. If I had known it would be sold for 1 Euro! then I would have offered 2! I am sure that the necessary funding for the future preservation of this boat could have been met, of that I have no doubt. I have followed the U-534 story ever since I was one of the "Original Birkenheaders" who vi

The work on U-534 has begun with workman on site. One of the most interesting periods of WW.II was during the closing months and after the German surrender. Yet so little has been researched by historians about what happened after the surrender? I do not purport to know everything, but as an historian myself and having researched through hundreds of contemporary reports, witness statements etc. The conclusion I come to is that you cannot just

Enjoy! In his new book "Puerto Seguro" (Norma Editorial, Buenos Aires, 2006), Argentine author Jorge Camarasa provides further information regarding the provision of facilities for U-boats along the Argentine shoreline in the period 1943-1945. The area of Buenos Aires province in question lies between Cape San Antonio and the town of Necochea. We begin at Cape San Antonio whic

Just slightly off topic! But I have just come back from holidaying in Cornwall and managed to visit the wreck site of the S89. I did a quick photo survey of the remains of the wreck which can be viewed on my webshots page the URL is: URL=http://news.webshots.com/photo/2292439850033241453TPavOl] Any questions don't hesitate to ask. Petition duly signed! I remember going through her in the early days when some of us old "seadogs" got together and met up at Birkenhead. A very moving experience. Lets hope the new owners come around to our way of thinking and keep her together in one piece for future generations. Regards Terry Andrews U-534 "Original Birkenheader"

Well I would have thought that Den Bla Avis would have at least put her up for sale on E/bay! She would have got more than 1 Euro? Seriously though it is a shame that she will be cut into three pieces it will destroy the atmosphere that U-534 had when you boarded her in the bow and walked through to the stern. Now looking through a glass window. Destruction beyond belief! If I had known thats

Hi Anthony These are not former German U-boat bunkers. They are former Soviet Cold War submarine pen/s built into a mountain in Sevastopol they are no longer operational and are now open for tourists to go around. I visited these pens a year ago whilst in the area and I can recommend them if you are a tourist in this strange but beutiful location. I have many photographs of the inte
