John & Rainer, From report of SO Escort for SL-56, CALABRIA is listed in sailing order for SL-56 however he states that three ships fell out from SLS-56, CALABRIA (4th) NICOLAS PATERAS (5th) PENNINGTON COURT (6th). EMPIRE CELT had torpedo nets deployed but one torp did get through. There was a lot of snowflake and rockets fired during these attacks, something that may have been misinterpreted as lights on a merchant. A confusing night action with plenty of u-boats firing a several differnt targets. Mark

Reading a message from naval attache Stockholm to admiralty, it mentions thatu-boats were using hair covered with watertight paper was been fitted to the inner side of the outer hull for controlling temperature. Dated May 1943. Does anyone have further details on this? KR Mark

All, Merchant vessel Everleigh reported coming under surface attack by a uboat on the morning of 25 December 1940, position from Everleigh was 59-30N 17-20W. Looking at who was at sea for this day, two boats are likely candidates, U95 & U124.However there is no mention in the diaries for either boat of an attack on 25 December. john, From admiralty analysis of attack, composition of escort at the time of first attack on SC-3, DUNDEE - 600 yards ahead of GULLPOOL, WANDERER - 2 miles on port beam or rear ship, WITCH - 2 miles on starboard beam of rear ship, ST. Seems odd to remove such a large structural section before sinking. If they wanted the guns removed then all they had to do was dismantle the mount. Why then did they not remove the turrets from the type XXI's before sinking them?

Guys, I was looking over the amazing photo's of U-778 on Innes McCarthy's FB page Maybe the photos's didn't show it but I wondering about the lack of any winter garden for AA gun placements. Was this a feature on some late war VIIC's? I thought by '44/'45 large wintergardens were standard? I'm sure someone will put me right. KR Mark

Ellerman's like Clan Line and other British shipping companies employed Indian/Lascar seamen. These crews were usuallly quite large, espeically if the ship was a coal fired steam ship. It would not be unusual to have 80-90 Indian ratings with 15-20 British officers on board.

I always wondered why it took the survivors so long to reach Ireland from the original position. I put it down to a lack of surviving navigating officers. On 20 June 1941 (possibly one day either side of this date) the survivors of Cathrine, sunk 17 June, 1941, by U-43, they encountered a submarine who surfaced nearby. Geoff, A romper is a vessel that has increased speed independently and broken away from the main convoy, invariably getting further ahead of the main convoy. It is the opposite of a straggler. Regards, Mark
