Felix, Here are a couple of boats that completed a good haul of patrols, although not that successful. All boats were commisioned after 01 Jan 1943 U-956, 13 patrols, one ship sunk and one TCL U-313. 12 patrols, no ships sunk Please note that I used the numbers of patrols listed on uboat.net. Numbers of patrols listed in Wynn differ from here.

Dave, I have checked the list of 23 survivors from Pacific Ranger that landed in Ireland and there is no Charles Kirven or anyone listed as an assistant cook. I have also checked the admiralty survivors report for those crew who landed in Ireland and they make no mention of any naval vessel. Although that is not to say that it did happen, I would be of the opinion that if there was a 'nav

Thanks Don, this general description is not what I am looking for. I want to know if anyone ever heard of the term 'stalk' in reference to depth charges and throwers. Regards, Mark

All, Reading a convoy report and it was stated that a merchant ship was carrying additional stores of depth charges and items referred to as 'stalks'. Would I be correct in saying that this is just another name for the spigot that held the depth charge tray and was launched with the depth charge when fired from the thrower? Regards, Mark

John, There is no position given for 3 May in the ktb, the last reported position was 1200 on 2 May at grid ER 3911 and the boat steamed 244 miles over the next 24 hours. There is no position given either for 4 May. Quandrant converter on uboatwaffe does not cover ER grid. Regards, Mark

Hi All, I'm just reading 'At All Costs' by Sam Moses, it follows the story of two merchant ships involved in Operation Pedestal. On the chapter about the sinking of HMS Eagle the author writes that Rosenbaum had a couple of brandies to'calm himself down'. How credible does does seem? A few tots before attacking an aircraft carrier? Obviously not something that would

Slightly off topic here and I apologise in advance, but out of interest, Strother Martin, the US actor who most notably played the Warden in 'Cool Hand Luke' was a swimming instructor to the USN during ther Second World War. regards, Mark

From S Atlantic War Diary 26 May 1941 All survivors from RADAMES picked up by Norwegian ship GLARONA. There is no mention of the survivors being reutrned to Freetown and the info on Warsailors.com would indicate GLARONA continued on voyage to St Helena. HMS Velox was at sea at this time escorting the carrier Eagle. Velox did not arrive back in port until 03 June at Bathhurst. There was

In looking into the attacks on SL-81 I noticed that in the first attacks carried out by the escorts on the afternoon of 03 August, the loss of U-401 that has been attributed to HMS Wanderer and the Norwegian destroyer St. Albans and the British corvette HMS Hydrangea does not correspond to what the archival documentation describes. I have looked at the ktb’s of the u-boats involved as well as the

Mike, I don't have the book in front of me but check out "Donitz's Last Gamble: The Inshore U-Boat Campaign 1944-45" by Lawrence Paterson. I am pretty sure there are some pictures of U-260 in this. Regards, Mark

For the survivors reports you want to look at ADM 199/2140 - covering the dates March to May 1942 & ADM 199/2141 covering June to July 1942. Looking through the indexes for both I see some of the ships you have listed and others are not. These volumes are usually only about 200 - 250 pages and are fully indexed so it will not take you long to get through them. The survivors report usually gi

Simon, Certainly in most marine power plants on ships it would be common practice to use the waste heat from the exhaust to heat water up for several reasons, I have never seen a cooling system for an exhaust (mind you I have never sailed on a sub either). I would suggest that its a protective sleeve around the main exhaust pipe. If the hot exhaust pipe was in direct contact with, or partially

A long shot but did U-boats have an impressed cathodic hull protection system? Possible sacrifical zinc anodes? Although you would expect to see them nearer the props. What about a pressure transducer for water depth monitoring? Just throwing a few ideas out there. Mark

John, A google earth route via the windward passage gives a distance of 1942 nautical miles, an average speed of 18 knots gives you 4.5 days steaming time. Mark
