THE "IBIBLIO" site has been rather quiet for a number of years, due mainly, I think, to the death of its originator. There is a vast amount of information still available within it, you have to search for it. For anyone seeking information regarding WW2 I recommend it. As far as I know it has not been updated for some years. It is well worth a visit. Good hunting Phi

Greetings Axel I see the dilemma. Again, from the "Ancient Mariner's" view, I would take the first item as degrees-minutes. One of the difficulties of an Open International Forum is that we are often dealing with a variety of languages, profession vagaries and customs. Who wrote it? Hopefully someone may have further information on this particular item. Good hunting Phil

Greetings Axel As an “ANCIENT MARINER” I would say that the first position layout is the usual practical layout in use by us seafarers. The final layout, indicating degrees and minutes would be useful to an inexperienced reader, but could have North and East added. The intermediate layout I have no knowledge of, and could only suggest it may look good or be useful to an Academic engaged

It all depends on the height above sea level of the component parts. A light 200feet above sea level could be visible from a ships bridge 50 feet above sea level for about 25 miles on a good day. Good hunting Phil

There is no mention in Rohwer or this site. Ships List gives 2 of that name: 1903 built by Gourlay Bros & Co., Dundee | 16 May 1916 mined and sunk near Inner Gabbard with the loss of 4 lives. 1921 built by Wilton's Scheepsw. & Machine Fabr., Rotterdam (293) | 1940 seized by Germans at Rotterdam, 3 November 1941 torpedoed off Cape Gris Nez by British TM boat and sunk. Good evening I don't know what the citation was for the BEM. It was amongst many granted in The New Year's Honours List, which was a long list of awards to the many who gave good service during WW2. Someone in the family may have the citation. Phil

Greetings Altostrauts Due to the curvature of the Earth, visibility of an object would depend on the height of eye of the observer above sea level, and the height of the object observed, together with the clearness of the atmosphere. The following gives some idea.

Just done more digging on the site referred to in the previous item: By clicking on SLAMAT on the side menu you get access to details etc of the Dutch ship SLAMAT. On that page you get two sub-menus for a SPEECH which the original inquirer refers, which mentions her relative, and the other details of OPERATION DEMON which involved the evacuation from Greece. G'day to you. This query was originally raised by someone in the family. Some useful data was found, as indicated above. I was not able to find any other details of the "Mystery ship SLAMAT". It would appear that the right answer could have been found in Service Records in Australia. Maybe this entry will find some more info. Good hunting Phil

A stepson of my maternal grandmother was amongst those lost when HMS Begonia was lost without trace in September 1917. It has been said that the loss could be attributed to a U-boat which failed to return. Has there been any update on this vessel? Phil
