Having now watched all 8 episodes on Sky Atlantic, I think the first movie with Jurgen Prochnow remains the better adaptation from Buchheim's classic. Although the shots of the inside of the U-boat were very convincing, added the extra story line plot of the sister / brother, I thought the additional story line of a U-boat commander abandoned mid ocean by another C/O with a death wish, along

Hi Walter, many thanks, seems odd to have the engines in only one ship, where if each ship sent carried tanks and engines the loss would not have been so severe as to have risk sending another ship with the same problem. Regards John

Hi I am reading Winston Churchill's account of the Second World War, now at June 1942, America are transporting brand new tanks and propelled guns to aid the British war effort in North Africa, apparently one merchant ship was carrying the engines for the tanks when it was torpedoed and sunk off Bermuda. Is the ship and attacking U-boat known?. john

Firstly were these three U-boats U264, U455 and U466 in September 1943 ordered to try and enter the Mediterranean?. If they were did BdU later cancel these orders or was it due to battle damage with U264 and U466 and collision damage with U455 cause their early return back to French bases? john

What method are use when determining to get a specific date to a unknown loss? Currently researching U22 which sailed on March 20th 1940, of the seven sources I have used there are five different date periods listed, the range including March 20th, 23rd, 27th, then going into to April 23rd and 25th. The later two being much earlier publications which I suppose are after of what was her due retur

These two boats were both sent their last signals on February 18th and 19th, as they were both were ordered to be operating within Wolfpack Hai 1 and deployed against the same convoys, ONS-29 and on-224. With no further contact or reported sightings from other U-boats as the possibility that they met the same fate as U659 and U439, only this time there were no survivors? John

Hi Caleb, having looked up U3520, there is very little information so here it is. She was put in the 8th U-Flotilla, from 12.01.45 which she was still in when she first sailed on the 2th from Gotenhafen to Swinemunde from where she sailed on the 29th relocating to Eckernforde, but was lost NE of Bulk in the mine field 54o28n/10o12e Grid AO77. The losses however is not as clear as there are diffe

Hi, Should this boat listed as being sunk on 12.07.1943 as being in the 23rd U-Flotilla, based within the Mediterranean, actually be listed as being in the 29th U-Flotilla? As I understand the 23rd was amalgamated into the 29th from 29.05.1942, as seen with U371, U559, U331, U97, U77 and the U83 which all ex 23rd UF boats survived past May 1942 and are listed as being in the 29th UF. Hi Thorsten, many thanks, I read the other source which states she was hit by 47 shells with two others missing, so if one reverses the 47 to 74 add the two misses and a total of 76. Regards John

This ship having been stopped and abandoned was shelled by U105, there is however to accounts of how many shells were fired one 76 while a second being about 47. How many shells could be fired by the deck gun in just over 30 minutes? which is the time listed as taking to sink her. John

Hi Jonathon, interesting topic, I notice all were launched between December 1940 and March 1941, but also that they were all built at different yards, U203 Germania Werft, Kiel : U331 Nordsee Werke, Emden : U351 Flensburger Schiff, Flensburg : U401 Danziger Werft, Danzig : U431 F. Schichau Gmbau, Danzig : U651 Howalds Werke, Hamburg and U83 Flender Werft, Lubeck. This may suggest trials in design

Hi Urs, thank you, Skjomenfjord, I take it was a subsidiary to Narvik where U-boats once ready to sail could transfer to refuel and maybe take on stores prior to commencement of their patrols. I see there were 39 sailings from this facility in the two years of operation. Regards John
