Hi, Barry ! Good to read you again about a topic so touchy for your national pride ! I DO like your story about "Invisible Hippopotamus"...As naughty French boys used to say when in college : "If my aunt had b...s , I would call her "Uncle"!" Enjoy your day, Mon Ami.

Hello, Being French, soundtrack is not a problem for me, and I confirm that this film shows really KL Endrass with U-46.Something very interesting,if you look carefully at the diving sequence : Censors have modified the figures on main depth indicator... Good evening.

Hi,Paul! I've not seen the picture, but definitely port is not Lorient, eventhough U-30 was the 1st U-Boot to arrive there with Lemp as CO, but, at the time of the event, France was not occupied. Good evening.

Hello,HWM ! Quite interesting...In any case, U-96 ( HLW ) and U-553 were belonging to 7° U-Flotille at the same period. Have a nice day.

Hi, VEK ! I've read with great interest your wikipedia file about Céline, it is a sound and honest piece of information. I'll contact one of my friends, who owns a bookshop specialized about this author, and ask him to indicate me a good biography translated in English, for, in my opinion,it's easier to understand Céline's books, which are full of autobiographical references

Hi, Johannes, Your point is interesting, but I'm a bit doubtful for following reasons: Rolf Thomsen's record as CO was rather dull, and the character "Thomsen" in Das Boot (Book & Film) is depicted as a broken hero...In addition, it's true that HLW was Flotilla Commander of the real Thomsen, but the description of this officer in the novel is less than positive, and I th

Hi,VEK ! Perhaps you are not experienced...but I've learnt a lot reading your post ! I'll try some comparison with French author Louis-Ferdinand Céline, I'm quite sure that most of you have heard this name, for me, and for a lot of french people, he is one of the greatest french authors, if not the greatest , of last century.I'm not sure that translations available in Englis

Agreed, at 100 % ! Perhaps one of our more experienced contributors could explain us why LGB was a so discussed person, even by respected commanders, such as Adi Schnee, but he was not the only one. Any clarification would be welcome !

Hi , Meg ! Miniseries of "Le Bateau" seen in France have been dubbed in French.I have to check my copy of "Director's cut"in DVD , with french dubbing, I've seen in German with french subtitles.I'll do that a little later, for my wife is becoming suspicious. Bonne journée.

Hi, Meg ! Thanks to your post,I revisited the miniseries seen in french TV more than 20 years back, with french dialogs.I can ensure you that the translation was, if not perhaps 100 % accurate, very pleasantly scattered with dirty and obscene jokes, one of the best moment being daily torpedo maintenance program in the front compartment, with all comparisons that you may easily guess...More serio

Good morning to everybody, Browsing ubootwaffe.net forum this morning, I've seen following post, issued by moderator Hubertus: "Cdr.of U-458 Kurt Diggins passed away on 1st of March 2007. Another great loss, Kurt's courtesy also supplied us with photos, a great many thanks. Kurt was President of Honour of the German Submariners Association , KzS a.D." I hope you'

Good evening, Meg, What is more touchy in IWO'character, if it's established that the real person was KL Groth, and I think we can take this for granted, is the political dimension : In the book and in Director's cut (German version ) he is spoken to by der Alte as"our young Hitlerjugend chief"...Strange enough, in the mini-series aired by French TV 20 years back, in fre

Agreed for table manners...but it seems also that there are some political aspects in this guy, appearing in both film and book, that may have given second thoughts to der Alte. Anyway, interesting point... Good evening.

Hello, Meg, I hope that IWO character ( KL Gerhard Groth, later CO of U-143,U-958 and U-397 ),was not the exact copy of the original...He passed away in Mexico City, where he was also born, at the age of 80,in 1997.Or may be he has not seen the film or read the book. Good evening for you.

Good evening to everybody, I've been told, but I forgot unfortunately details, boat n°, date, acting CO,etc, the case where after a serious attack, CO, IWO,IIWO,being seriously wounded and disabled, the U-Boot was sailed back to his base by the Doctor who was part of the crew in this patrol. Any help from experienced and wise forum contributors would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Good morning, Meg, When der Alte says : " This man should never have been sent out again in the state he was in ", he's speaking about Bachmann, and not about Thomsen... So mistery remains, but, in another scene of the book, just after they have their encounter with Thomsen's boat, der Alte speaks about shortened period of turnaround time between patrols and consequent poor m

Hi, Meg ! The name you are looking for is KL Heinz Hirsacker ( U-572 ).If you have access to "Conning Tower", you'll find a very detailed biography of this guy.If not, let me know, and I'll try to sum it up.In any case, he was really sentenced to death by military court, all pleas for clemency rejected, and the pistol was delivered to him by one of his mates on the eve of his

Good evening to everybody ! In movie, during the introducing scenes at "Bar Royal", KL Philipp Thomsen, completely drunk after his return from a difficult patrol and the official remittance of his KC, delivers himself at the microphone a very politically incorrect and rude speech about AH capabilities, as well as jokes about his chastity and teetotaler. In the book, same speech is suppo

Hi, Vidar, I'm a bit surprised, because dates are not matching...D'Estienne d'Orves was arrested in Nantes on 20/01/1941, transferred to Angers for preliminary interrogation by Gestapo, sent afterwards to Germany for further enquiries, then sent back to Paris for trial by German military court, sentenced to death and shot by firing squad with his two deputies on 29/08/1941.
