Bonsoir, Jacques, I'm French, but, if you don't mind , I'll put my answer in English... I think the boat you are looking for may be U-485,VII-C type, Commander KL Friedrich LUTZ,11°U-Flotille ( Bergen),which arrived in La Rochelle on 22/04/1945 and left on 29/04/1945.Scheduled destination unknown, for she surrendered in Gibraltar on 08/05/1945,following Dönitz's last order

Hi,Pat ! It's definitely NOT HLW (I have a lot of pictures of him ), and this CO is at 99 % H.J. Hellriegel , who took over from HLW as U-96 commander. Have a nice day.

Good evening, Ladies & Gentlemen ! Meine Damen und Herren , Guten Abend ! (I'm sure that our friend VEK will be pleased by his pupil's good manners...) More seriously, I've just finished reading " Count not the Dead ", by Michael L. Hadley, and I was surprised to see the magnitude of the uproar created by LGB as described in chapter " Buchheim's Wave &quo

Hello,VEK ! You are right about jokes in France between 1940/1944 about "porte-épées"... In fact, this kind of daggers, together with their protection devices, were called by naughty french patriots " pompes à vélo", for they were rather similar in shape with bicycle pumps...The main joke, but quite dangerous, was to remove such trophies from drunk petty officers in buse

Hi, Pat ! Lots of thanks for correcting my mistake, I've found the concerned page in Suhren's memoirs...In addition they were crew mates (35) and affected to the same flotilla in Brest during same period. The only excuse I can find, and I confess that's a poor one, is that these two commanders (Salman and Uphoff) had some physical resemblance in the pictures posted in CT section of

Guten Tag, Freund ! I've read, and I'm pretty sure of that ( but now, I can't remember where, but the book was considered as a serious one ), that Salman and Suhren were both sharing the same taste for dirty jokes and very politically incorrect stories, most of them aiming top brass of 3rd. Reich...Perhaps I jumped too quickly to conclusions when writing they were good friends. It

Hi,Denis,Paul and MPC, Some additionnal and I hope interesting information about U-9 and Iron Cross emblem, sources being CT section of this site and magazine U-BOOT IM FOCUS. When war started, all identification marks, n° and bronze eagle nationality markings were removed.Painted insignia were allowed in case-by-case bases, but not considered as official, first one being certainly Scapa Flow

Everett, In German, Mt stands for "Matrose",i.e.able & confirmed seaman.I may think that "Mate"in USN has the same meaning...Being French , any mistake is possible. Good evening.

Hi,Paul ! Enter "Werner Henke" in search engine, and you'll find a lot of very valuable information...To make it short, that's a typical case of "suicide through sentries". Enjoy your evening.

Hello, MPC,Dennis and Paul, Iron crosses on U-9 conning tower were of two kinds : One was a fixture with imperial crown in its upper branch , a "W"( Standing for Kaiser's initial ?) in the middle , and 1914 in the lower branch. The other was a simpler Iron cross , painted, with no details . Please refer to uboataces website, insignia section. U-24 seems to have had a different embl

Hi, Paul, I have in my library french translation of Günther PRIEN's memories...For sure, he signed the book, but certainly after deep vetting by Goebbel's team.In any case, it was written in August 1940 for the original release, and Prien clearly states that he became a member of NSDAP in 1932. Perhaps this book is still available in English. Have a nice day.

Hi, Scott ! Lots of thanks for your very detailed and interesting post.If available with you, following data are of some interest for me, and certainly for other contributors: Concerning IX type U-Boote,not only IX-C: -Maximum fuel qty. -Normal fuel qty, out of which external qty (Ballasts) and internal (Within pressure hull). I do hope that I'm not too demanding... Thanks in advance,

Hi, Paul, I agree with your statement about Lüth and Brandi being the only two recipients of KC with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Hoyt has certainly been misguided, and I see no valid reason to grant an award to Suhren and to cancel it immediately after.Anyhow, I'll check with Suhren's autobiography "Wet Oak Leaves". Good evening.
